Our CFACT Collegians have started the semester by hitting the ground running, with the first event of the year taking the form of a campus-wide survey in the Garden State. Collegian Ariana Alonso took advantage of William Paterson University’s annual club fair to ask students if they supported offshore windfarms even if it meant threatening endangered whale species.

The CFACT booth quickly became the buzz of the fair, with students lining up to take their turn to weigh in on the issue with a tally mark, learn more about the topic, and engage in spirited debate. Ariana reports that many students approached the table initially confused, unaware entirely that whales were threatened by offshore windfarms. “Some people were a little confused at first, but we began having great conversations about the danger windfarms pose to marine life. Ultimately, we tried to persuade them to vote “No,” but we did our best to impartially inform them so they could make up their mind on how to answer.”

At times it appeared that CFACT’s best efforts to educate and persuade passing student fairgoers were in vain, but thankfully in the end more students agreed that offshore wind power shouldn’t be supported if it threatens endangered whales than not.

As illustrated above, Ariana surveyed over sixty students, with 61.9 percent of students responding “No” to only 38.1 percent of students responding “Yes.” Thanks to her hard work, Ariana can now boast that her campus officially rejects offshore wind power and dozens of New Jersey college students are now equipped with the facts. The “C-Facts” that is.
