It was a hot and humid afternoon on the beautiful campus of the University of Houston Downtown (UHD) on Tuesday. Despite the comforting southern atmosphere, a problem sullied the landscape: too much litter. However, thanks to the noble efforts of Driessen Fellow Hai An Hoang, that’s no longer the case!
Despite cancelations by other groups supposed to aid in the effort, Hai An and half a dozen other students determined to remedy the situation took to cleaning up their campus streets and greenery all by themselves.
Armed with plastic gloves, garbage bags, and handheld trash grabbers, the students spread out and canvassed the area in search of trash.
And trash they found. Before long, Hai An and her cohort quickly filled over five bags with refuse and waste as they scoured every grassy area and street corner they came to. Their efforts not going unnoticed, one passing student stopped them and asked for information on the next clean up effort. When CFACT Collegians lead, others will follow.
According to Hai An, other clean ups will indeed be needed to keep their campus maintained. “I was very glad to have students be more involved on campus. I would say the cleanup was a success despite us not getting all the trash on site. This just means we can always host future campus cleanups.”
Thanks to her hard work and determination, Hai An demonstrated to the rest of her student body that CFACT Collegians aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty in pursuit of a litter-free environment.
