On Thursday April 22, 2011 Dr. Kelvin Kemm, a South African Nuclear Physicist and Member of the CFACT International Board, spoke to about 12 students about life in South Africa, nuclear power, and the nuclear reactors in Japan.
In particular Kemm discussed Fukushima and the Daiichi nuclear power plant in relation to the current situation in Japan after the earthquake and tsunami. Kemm noted that although the plant is over forty years old it shut down properly and leaked minimal radiation.
Dr. Kemm sees a bright future for nuclear power especially in relation to Africa, where coal is scarce and solar and wind just don’t generate the kind of electricity needed to provide cost effective solutions.
