Over the course of the fall 2024 semester, CFACT campus representatives have been hard at work organizing clean up initiatives both on and off campus throughout the country. Good stewardship of the land and nature is a core tenet of CFACT’s philosophy, and as such these students have been keen on ridding their communities of any unsightly trash and litter.
Pictured above, collegian Connor Taylor and several friends recently scoured Faulkner University’s campus in Alabama for any litter they could find. According to Connor, the endeavor was a great success. “We started at the front of the campus but didn’t find much trash because the grounds crew usually picks up around that area. We made our way to the different parking lots around housing and found a lot of trash. We got a lot more than I thought we would.”
In Conway South Carolina, CFACT student fellow Michael Wingo organized his own clean-up effort with a couple friends at Costal Carolina University. Sweeping their campus’s parking lots and sidewalks, the group quickly filled more than five bags with waste and discarded debris. According to Michael, “The event went great, and even with a fairly clean campus we got several bags filled up!“
Meanwhile in Texas, campus representative Gadai Bulgac assembled a team of more than half a dozen students from the University of Houston and community members to clean up an abandoned lot in downtown Houston. Spending most of the day bagging trash and heaping up larger pieces of garbage to be hauled away, Gadai and his group represented CFACT well.
According to him, “we had a fantastic clean up this Sunday with excellent turnout. We found a really dirty part of the city to clean up, and we filled several industrial-sized bags up in no time. We had many people stop and ask who we were with, we proudly told them that we were with CFACT.”
Lastly, in Granville, Ohio, collegian Luke Alley hosted a clean up effort on Denison University’s campus in coordination with the local College Republicans chapter. Wanting to ensure the campus’s cleanliness after a long weekend of Halloween parties, Luke and his cohort swept the green spaces of his campus from one end to the other.
In retrospect, Luke reported, “I hosted a trash clean-up with the College Republicans to not only keep our campus clean after the Halloween weekend parties, but also to showcase how individuals can complete good works and improve communities without relying on government to do so. The team was able to pick up a lot of trash left over from the weekend and talk to bystanders about the importance of voluntary action and littering avoidance to help keep the environment clean.”
