In 2003, CFACT traveled to Cancun, Mexico, to participate in the World Trade Organization summit being held in that city's fabulous hotel district. Unlike most delegates attending the summit, CFACT joined forces with several other free-market-oriented groups and ventured to the city's edge to assist the citizens of the tiny village of Valle Verde. The 3,000 residents live in huts and shacks made of sticks and tin and lack sewage treatment, paved roads, or even running water. The path that the vehicles took to reach Valle Verde passed through downtown Cancun, which is replete with shops, restaurants, chain stores, and a burgeoning prosperity.
Under the watchful eye of reporters covering the WTO, CFACT and its allies distributed two tons of food to Valle Verde residents -- and vowed to return to forge a long-term relationship with its people. Valle Verde literally transformed CFACT from a group that simply advocated constructive ideas into an organization, which now sought to implement them as well.
In 2005, tragedy struck Valle Verde as Hurricane Wilma devastated the town. CFACT returned to aid with relief efforts in cooperation with the City of Joy Foundation or Fundación Ciudad de la Alegría. Valle Verde remains an incredibly poor village, hiding in the shadow of the hotel district.
CFACT returned again in February of 2009 to put together a new program. In today’s world of technology, future generations will need computer training in order to advance. Collegians chapters across the country spent the spring semester conducting laptop drives on their campuses to collect laptops for the students in Valle Verde. This summer CFACT will bring down a group of students to deliver the laptops and train the teachers in basic computer skills so they in turn can teach their students.
