Why Free Speech Matters

Recently reports have come to surface of Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites banning or limiting the abilities of conservative personalities.

Beginning with Glenn Beck and now seeing the permanent ban of Milo Yiannopoulos one by one dissenting voices from the mainstream begin to suffer the same fate.

Censorship, through this new found regressive ideology of political correctness is quickly emerging as the greatest threat to our freedoms and liberties. From the college campuses to the workplace the language of “microaggressions” as a term for any action or word that offends someone is dehumanizing. The truth is masked by a pseudo apathy as people remain silent to blatant absurdity in fear of retribution.

No better example can be seen than in the climate debate. The skeptics constantly welcome debate, dissenting opinions, and objectivity. The alarmist on the other hand rely on scare tactics, threats, and outright censorship.

The refusal to discuss the issues and accept the presentation of objective data proves that wherever free speech is limited, tyranny lives. For it was George Orwell who said, “If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.”

Therefore everyone who desires liberty and the freedoms we enjoy should feel obligated to fight and protest censorship wherever it is present.
